He studied for Knut Sönstevold at the National College of Music in Stockholm graduating in 1987 with a soloist diploma. He was the first bassonist in Sweden to recieve this distinction. Anders Engström has recieved many international awards amongst these being first prize in the Geneva Music Competition as well as the Brazilian State Villa Lobos Prize.
