Håvard Gimse, pianoThe Kristiansand Chamber orchestra with its 17 string players, is Norway's only chamber orchestra employing musicians full time. The ensemble went professional in the latter 1980s- Stephen Baratt-Due was musical director from 1990 to 1996. He was succeded as of the 1996/97 season by Swedish violinist Jan Stigmer. Its much to their credit that the orchestra is now reaping wide acclaim of audiences and critics alike. Occasionally, the ensemble is augmented under the name Kristiansand Stmphony Orchestra for performances of symphonic music, operas and major sacred works.
Jan Stigmer, the leader of Kristiansand Chamber Orchestra functions as in the old days as the conductor. Having played with some of the world's leading orchestras, such as the English and the Moscow Chamber Orchestras, and having recived high acclaim from audiences and critics alike, there is no doubt that Jan Stigmer is one of the most exiting violinists of his generation.
Born in Sweden in 1964, he recived his first violin lessons at the age of six. From the age of eighteen, he continued his studies abroad, first with György Pauk in London, then with André Gertler in Brussels, and later with Herman Krebbers in Amsterdam. Since his debut in 1978, he has made solo apparences in most European countries. His work has involved him with famous artists such as Barbara Bonney, Norbert Brainin, Barry Tuckwell, James Galway, Rivka Golani, Victor Lieberman, Josef Suk, Barbara Hendrix and many others. Jag Stimer plays on a violin by Antonio StradivariusHåvard Gimse, the pianist on this recording was born in 1966, and has established himself as one of Norways's leading pianists. Gimse started with piano lesson at age six. He graduated from the Norwegian State Academy of Music with highest marks, continuing his studies at the Salzburg Mozarteum and the Academy of Music in Berlin, where he recived his diploma in 1995. Since 1990 , he has studied with Professor Jiri Hlinka in Bergen and Oslo. Mr Gimse has worked with the major Orchestras in the U.K., Czech Republic, Norway, Sweden and Denmark under conductors like Berglund, Segerstam, Talmi, Schönvandt, Ruud , Stringer and Iona Brown.
His festival apperances are numerous, since 1986 he has been an anual guest at the Bergen International Festival, and He has given recitals in Wigmore Hall, London, Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Schauspielhaus, Berlin and has been featured at the Oslo International Master Pianst Series.
Gimse have recorded extensivly, his more recent recordings include concertos and solo works by Sibelius and Tveitt for NAXOS, Grieg Violin Sonatas with Arve Tellefsen for SONY, and Chopin piano works for NAIM.
