Edvard Grieg
Shortly after coming home from Italy in 1884, Grieg composed this work in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Holberg's death - an inspired and intense piece conceived in his "composer's den" in Lofthus as he kept a watchful eye on the progress of construction work on Troldhaugen.
His two elegiac melodies, Heart Wounds and Spring, were originally written for voice and piano (lyrics: A.O. Vinje) in 1888, and arranged for strings immediately afterwards. In May the same year, Grieg conducted the string versions in London with the Royal Philharmonic Society. It was an enormous success and the leading orchestras immediately added the pieces to their repertoire.

Jan Stigmer, leader
The Kristiansand Chamber orchestra with its 17 string players, is Norway's only chamber orchestra employing musicians full time. The ensemble went professional in the latter 1980s- Stephen Baratt-Due was musical director from 1990 to 1996. He was succeded as of the 1996/97 season by Swedish violinist Jan Stigmer. Its much to their credit that the orchestra is now reaping wide acclaim of audiences and critics alike. Occasionally, the ensemble is augmented under the name Kristiansand Stmphony Orchestra for performances of symphonic music, operas and major sacred works.Jan Stigmer, the leader of Kristiansand Chamber Orchestra functions as in the old days as the conductor. Having played with some of the world's leading orchestras, such as the English and the Moscow Chamber Orchestras, and having recived high acclaim from audiences and critics alike, there is no doubt that Jan Stigmer is one of the most exiting violinists of his generation.
Born in Sweden in 1964, he recived his first violin lessons at the age of six. From the age of eighteen, he continued his studies abroad, first with György Pauk in London, then with André Gertler in Brussels, and later with Herman Krebbers in Amsterdam. Since his debut in 1978, he has made solo apparences in most European countries. His work has involved him with famous artists such as Barbara Bonney, Norbert Brainin, Barry Tuckwell, James Galway, Rivka Golani, Victor Lieberman, Josef Suk, Barbara Hendrix and many others.
